Lori Jo with Awards 051912The Lancaster Red Rose Chapter continued their progress as the premier men’s chorus in Lancaster County by placing third in the 2012 Western Division and seventh place overall (out of 24 choruses in the two participating divisions!) during the annual Mid-Atlantic District Western Division & Atlantic Division Convention and Competition Saturday evening. Despite being the host chapter, with the all the various duties that entailed, the chorus also received the Western Division’s Most Improved Chorus award for the second year in a row.

The convention, for the Lancaster Red Rose Chapter, began early Friday morning as they setup the stage and convention hall. It’s a lot of work, especially for a 21-member chorus. After a brief break for lunch, the chorus was back to work by late afternoon to begin work for the evening’s quartet completion. Tickets were sold, crowds ushered in and 21 quartets were corralled through the convention center maze from ready rooms, to picture studios and finally on stage. It’s non-stop work from 7PM until the last quartet leaves the arena.

It all started again even earlier Saturday morning. Not only was the chorus in charge of making sure Saturday’s chorus competition began smoothly and on time, but they started the show as the first chorus to compete! They began their set with Lerner and Loewe’s song from My Fair Lady, On the Street Where You Live. That was followed by the competition’s only comic arrangement, Weird Al Yankovic’s You’re Good Enough for Now, appropriately punctuated throughout with audience laughter.

Lancaster’s 21-man (and one lady director) performance garnered a division total of 1172 points, a sum bested only by the twice as large Keystone Capital Chorus of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and the three times as large and two-time International Chorus winner, Chorus of Chesapeake of Dundalk, Maryland.

Once off stage and after the cheering stopped, it was back to work assuring that the remaining 23 choruses enjoyed a smooth if nerve-wracking competition. Judges’ scores were tallied immediately following the close of the contest. A huge cheer arose when the MC announced that Lancaster had finished third in their division. Another roar went up when he also announced that Lancaster had retained the trophy for Most Improved Chorus.

Not only had a third place finish resulted in their being invited to sing on the Show of Champions Saturday evening, a mere dream just hours earlier, but it also meant that for the first time since 2004, the Lancaster Red Rose Chorus had earned its way onto the Mid-Atlantic District Competition Stage, this year being held in Ocean City, Maryland. Incidentally, the Lancaster Red Rose Chorus was invited to sing on the 2011 District Competition Stage as mic testers – where they finished 14th out of 24 choruses (although that’s unofficial so keep it under you hat!)

So congratulations to the Lancaster Red Rose Chorus. Take time the celebrate guys – you deserve it. Keep up the great work!
